SECOND EWE FAIR MATAWHERG OFFERING VALUES SETTLE DOWN REVIVAL AFTER START .More than 40,000 ewes were yarded at the Matawhero Ewe Fair, the second of the season, to-day. There was a large attendance of buyers, including a few from the north.

The sale at the outset was erratic, and values were not at all to the vendors’ liking, although most met the market, but after that the market settled down to a basis that was more up to recent levels, although on a lower scale than at the first ewe fair of the season. Bidding was more confident following the New Zealand Government’s announcement on Saturday that it would purchase all the unexportable supplies of meat. One of the special offerings was a draft from Atea station, the highest figure being for four-tooths, which sold at 26s 6d. Two-Tooth Reach 26s In the other pens, two-tooths during the first three and a quarter hours’ selling sold to 26s with other wellgrown lines from 23s 5d to 25s 6d. while those of small to medium size brought 17s. About 6000 two-tooths were sold up to 1.15 p.m. Four-tooths of which only a small number was offered, ranged from 20s lOd to 265, the Atea four-tooths topping the market at • 26s 6d. Only one line of six tooths was sold, the price being 19s, while one line of eight-tooths brought 13s 9d.

Five-year-olds of which nearly 3000 were olt'ered during the first half oi the sale, sold to 17s for a line from Mr. A. Gibson, Pamoa station, while other sorts with size and condition ranged from 14s to 16s and others down to 9s 6d for those with low mouths. Six-year-olds reached 13s 6d for a line from Mr. Chas. Matthews, two other good lines selling at 12s 6d and 13s, with those with doubtful mouths reaching as low as 5s 6d. ,Mixed-aged sheep sold to 16c 7d for four-tooth to five-year ewes from Tuaroa station while a line of four, six and eight-tooth reached 15s 6d.
