COMPULSORY LOAN
DEMANDS ON SOLDIERS FIGHTING OVERSEAS MINISTER'S EXPLANATION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day, A complaint that representatives of members of the fighting forces overseas were receiving notices demanding the payment of contributions to the compulsory war loan was referred to the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, yesterday. The Minister said that the circular referred to was sent out in accord with the usual procedure. The department concerned could not possibly know the names of income-tax payers who were overseas on active service. Every assessment was subject to appeal and the appeal committee would fully and carefully consider every case and could safely be left to determine every application on behalf of absent soldiers in accord with their service to the commonwealth.
