WAIROA’S 450 MEN
HOME GUARD PROGRESS FIGURES FOR DISTRICT NUHAKA REACHES 100 Reports from the northern fringe of Hawke’s Bay indicate that the Home Guard movement has been taken on enthusiastically both in the town and district. The Herald’s Wairoa representative stated to-day that the progress in enrolments was satisfactory, the total for the district reaching 450. Raupung'a held its first parade on Sunday, 34 answering the roll call. Whakaki also had a good muster, and Nuhaka was being well organised. New members were enrolled at a Home Guard meeting in the L.D.S. Hall. Nuhaka, on Saturday, and the numbers were brought up to 100. states the Herald’s Nuhaka correspondent. Mr. A. Roiland, who was in the chair, explained that the object of the meeting was to put the Home Guard on a working basis. A committee of five was required and recommendations for a commandant were to be forwai'dcd to headquarters.
After several present had showed a disinclination to accept nomination lor the committee, the following were elected; Mr. G. D. Tod. R'.S.A.; Mr. J. T. Begley, farmers; the Rev. Wi Moana, natives; Mr. A. Roiland, employees: Mr. C. Bartlett, employers.
Members agreed to parade on Saturday afternoons, the first parade to be held this week in the grounds of the Nuhaka Native School, Mr. R. Steed having given permission for the use of the L.D.S. Hall in the event of wet weather. Several of those present reported that they were in possession of .303 rifles.
