THE WEATHER Last Night's Forecast General Situation. —An anticyclone covers New Zealand, but pressure is falling again in the south with the advance of a westerly depression across the south Tasrnan Sea. Forecast.—Winds moderate and variable in the north and moderate but freshening northerly to westerly winds prevailing from Cook Strait southward; seas slight or moderate generally at first, but later rising about Cook Strait and south of Westport. In the eastern Tasman Sea light and variable winds; slight seas in the northern portion, moderate but freshening north-westerly winds and gradually rising seas in the southern portion. Weather for the most part fair to fine, scattered rain developing 10-morrovv however in the southwestern and the far southern areas of the South Island. Temperatures mild to warm.

Blue sky with some cloud was reported from East Cape to Napier this morning, but elsewhere conditions were overcast, with rain at Wellington. Winds were slight from the north-east and the barometer had remained stationary. Temperatures at 9 a.m. were: Tauranga, 78 degrees; Gisborne, 72: Opotiki, 71; Auckland and Napier, 68: East Cape, 64; Wellington. 60. Seas were slight to moderate.
