TWO FOR WAIROA

KATESBRIDGE SCORES BIG RACE TO GAY MIMIC TURF CLUB MEETING FURTHER TOTE INCREASE Honours in the Turanga Stakes Handicap at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer meeting at the Malcaraka course yesterday rested with Gay Mimic, who went out in front at the start and stayed there throughout. He received some opposition from Boldstep in the straight, but beat him so thoroughly that Diana Tetrix was able to get up in time to take second money from Boldstep. This was the first time for many meetings that the Gisborne patrons had seen Gay Mimic set the pace throughout a race, and his performance was refreshing after the recent disappointments experienced by his supporters. The quality of the pace he set is shown by the time, the best recorded for a mile and a quarter in this district for some seasons. Lady Owner’s Successes

Katesbridge, the Wairoa-owned mare which won the Maiden Scurry on Saturday, won the Hack Cup Handicap yesterday and gave Mrs. W. L. Torbett, her owner, the satisfaction of collecting a trophy. Katesbridge was placed third in an earlier event yesterday, and her record for the Wairoa and Gisborne meetings is represented by two seconds at Wairoa and two wins and a third at Makaraka. The mare is in great condition and finishes as well as any runner seen at either meeting. The Greenmeadows filly Lady. Ex, winner of the last event on the first day, repeated her performance in the Farewell Hack Handicap yesterday, coming out of the field to beat River Tide in a strong finish. It was a good race to wind up the meeting, with three-quarters of a length and a length a quarter spacing the placed horses. Again the totalisator figures showed an increase for the day, £5702 10s being put through the machine on six races. This sum was £907 in excess of the amount handled on seven races on the corresponding day last year. The increase in totalisator turnover for the meeting was £1604 10s, the aggregate investments for the two days being £12,727.

Late events resulted as under: —

There was no time lost at the barrier, and Diana Tetrix, on the rails, got a characteristically speedy start. She was steadied down going past the stand, however, and Gay Mimic went up into the lead, with Diana Tetrix and Boldstep together in behind him, and Queen’s Dream a length further back. Gay Mimic set a good pace and opened out a lead of two lengths from the nearest of the others, holding this right round to the west bend, where Boldstep shortened the gap by half, coming round into the straight a length behind Gay Mimic. For ; time Boldstep threatened danger, but he fell away in the last half-furlong, while Gay Mimic maintained his solid effort. Diana Tetrix finished on well and displaced Boldstep just on post to take second money. Gay Mimic won by a length and a half, and a nose separated second and third. Queen’s Dream gave a moderate performance. Time, 2min. 7 3-ssec HACK CUP HANDICAP

Katesbridge won her second race of the meeting when she contested the Hack Cup Handicap and beat Waikawa in a strong finish. The Wairoa mare was not one of the early runners to show, but came into the argument strongly from the half-mile post, where she moved up on the rails and established a good position in behind the leaders. From the turn for home she broke away with only Waikawa offering really strong opposition, and she kept it going until she had Waikawa beaten on the post.

Quilp made most of the running, with Waikawa in second position all through as far as the straight. Arabic, making his first appearance at the meeting, was third or fourth, disputing first with Centennial and later with Katesbridge for third. He was well placed for the run home, but took a lot of shaking up, and when he began his run Katesbridge and Waikawa were out of reach. Quilp dropped out of the running in the straight and finished last. Time, lmin. 41 4-ssec. FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP First £BS, second £lO, third £5; (i fur. 1— LADY EX. A. W. Meikle’s b. in the. last race, but the others got going well, River Tide being first out, with Smiling Personality next, and Acre’s Beauty third. Mimicry, Ririwai and No Wonder were the next three. Acre’s Beauty went up to the front in short order, leading by. two lengths from Smiling Personality at the half-mile. River Tide was a handy third, and Mimicry still fourth. Smiling Personality overhauled Acre’s. Beauty steadily approaching the turn for home, and Lady Ex was improving also, coming round on the outside. River Tide got up on the inside as they made the turn and came past Smiling Personality on even terms with Lady Ex. Skyette put in a good finish, but just failed to beat Mimicry for third money. After Skyette, the order past the judge was Smiling Personality, No Wonder, Ririwai, Red Hunting, and Acre’s Beauty. Time, lmin. 15 l-ssec.
