SET FIRE TO HOUSE

MAORIS SENT TO PRISON

“Setting fire to the bouse of a man serving with the forces was a mean and reckless crime,” said Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court in Auckland, when three Maoris from the Kaikohe district, Frank Kahi Wiparata, aged 27, labourer, Arthur Solomon Tauhinu, aged 27, labourer, and Toru Solomon Tauhinu, aged 22, labourer, appeared for sentence on charges of arson, house-breaking and burglary. A fourth charge of receiving stolen property also had been admitted by Toru S. Tauhinu.

Wiparata seemed to be the ringleader. stated His Honour. In fear that their entry of the house would be detected they had returned and set fire to the house. All the prisoners would be sentenced to terms of imprisonment, , Wiparata to 15 months, Arthur Tauhinu to nine months and Toru Tauhinu to six months.
