TOLAGA BAY BOWLS

SUCCESSFUL TOURNEY FINALIST TAKEN ILL (Htiialil Correspondent.) One of the most pleasant and successful tournaments held by the Tolaga Bay Bowling Club was slightly marred because S. McKenzie, of the Poverty Bay Bowling Club, Gisborne, whilst playing in the final game against I. Stephenson, Gisborne Bowling Club, was taken ill and the game could not be completed. At the time of his indisposition, which fortunately proved only temporary, S. McKenzie’s team was leading by 14 points to 10 with five more heads to be played. Arrangements are being made to finish the game in Gisborne at an early date. The results of the two rounds played during the week-end were:— A Section' Fourth Round.—Rennie 24, v. Short 11; Johnson 21, v. Thompson 11; Stephenson 19, v. Hurlstone 13, Ritchie 27, v. Branch 17. Fifth Round!—Short 33, v. Hurlstone 13; Branch 24, v. Thompson 15; Stephenson 24 v. Niven 11; Sinclair 24, v. Smith 11. Summary.—Armstrong and McKenzie, 4 wins; Blackburn and Park, 3 wins; Sinclair and Taylor, 2; Smith and Niven, 1. In the play-off to find the section winner, McKenzie defeated Armstrong by 7 points to 4. The final game between I. Stephenson and S. McKenzie was a great exhibition of bowls and was very keenly contested. At the end of the seventh head the game was 4-all and at the end of tho twelfth head the score was 9—7 in favour of McKenzie. McKenzie then added a three and a ttvo in the two succeeding heads and Stephenson responded with a two and a one in the following two heads, making the score 14—10 in favour of McKenzie, when, unfortunately, he was taken ill.
