GISBORNE CRICKET

REVERSAL OF FORM LEADERS FARE BADLY CITY HEADING G.H.5.0.8. ADVANTAGE TO OLD BOYS A distinct reversal of form to that shown during the first round of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association’s Senior A Grade competition was noticed on the first day of the second round on Saturday, when City, the bottom team in the competition table to date, had a substantial lead in the first innings over G.H.5.0.8., the leaders, while Old Boys, next to City for last position, secured ■an advantage over Marist, the second on the list.

G.H.5.0.8. fared badly, being all out for 61, the only double-figure batsman being E. Gardner with 29, while four failed to score. P. H. Dow came out with a good bowling average, taking six wickets in just over 10 overs for 31 runs. City made an uncertain start, losing two wickets for 22, but G. H. Stewart, L. R. Torrie and ,J. Barbour made a substantial difference, the Torrie-Barbour partnership adding 64 to bring the fourthwicket score to 115, Torrie knocking up 47. The innings closed at 151, a lead of 90 runs over G.H.5.0.8.

Marist made a shaky start against Old Boys with two wickets down for nine runs and four for 39, but E. James, who opened, continued to bat steadily, and J. Egan and C. Scholium provided handy contributions. James finished up with 42, and the innings closed at 121. I. Niven took six wickets for 44 runs. Old Boys started handsomely, and the opening partnership of F. Newton and C. Fraser put on 90. These two were the only double-figure men of the innings, Newton making 58, including a six and six fours. The innings closed at 143, and J.
