MEAT.EXPORT SEASON MOST KILLINGS LOWER BACONERS AN EXCEPTION Killings for export at New Zealand freezing works this season from October 1 to November 30. according to the returns issued by the New Zealand Moat Producers’ Board, show a total of 449,585 freight carcases. Killings during the first two months of the 1039-40 season were 34,734 freight carcases in excess of this season’s total. Lamb killings wore confined almost wholly to die North Island, with a total of 156.835 carcases, compared with 361.880 carcases for the same period last season. Wether mutton killings this season have been 1050 carcases, compared with 29.028 in the corresponding period of last year, and ewe mutton 3240 carcases, compared with 8407. There was a substantial advance in connection with pork. Details are as follows, the corresponding figures for last season being shown in parentheses:— 1 ,

Frozen beef production for the two months reached 14,25.7 quarters, compared with 3214 last season. Killings of other classes of meat (expressed in 601 b. freight carcases) from October 1 until November 30, 1940 (with figures for the previous season in parentheses) are as follows: Boneless beef. 33,454 (50,803): boneless bobby veal, 73.606 (56,803); sundries, 24.890 (24,780).

KAURI TIMBER COMPANY BUILDING IN NEW ZEALAND Because of defence' requirements in Australia and construction of workers’ houses in New Zealand, there was great building activity in the two countries, said Mr. J. Bishop, chairman, at the annual meeting of the Kauri Timber Company, Limited, in Melbourne recently. There were, however, indications, particularly in New Zealand, of a decline in building. With the curtailment of imports, a heavy burden had been placed upon local supplies, but steps had been taken to cope with this problem.
