RECORD EQUALLED
WICKET KEEPING FEAT SEVEN BATSMEN CAUGHT R. Saggers, one of the youngest of Sydney’s senior cricketers, achieved a notable wicket-keeping performance in Brisbane last month, when he caught seven batsmen in one innings in the first big inter-State match of the season. This was for New South Wales versus the combined Queensland and Victoria eleven. His feat equalled the world record previously shared by D. Tallon (Queensland), E. G. Price (Middlesex), E. G. Smith (Warwickshire), and W. Farrimond (Lancashire). All have brought off seven dismissals. Price, like Saggers, caught his seven; but Tallon, who caught three and stumped four Victorians two seasons ago, is considered by many to have registered the greatest performance of the five.
Saggers first forced his way under the notice of the New South Wales selectors with some very attractive bailing in pennant games. It was not very long before he also started to impress them as a 'keeper with all the promise of a coming Oldfield or Carter. Now he is in the State eleven both as a wicket-keeper and batsman.
Following his magnificent effort at Brisbane, Saggers crashed badly against South Australia at Sydney-a week ago. He dropped four chances in two overs off the appropriately named Pepper. This is considered in Sydney to be another record. Prior to that Saggers dropped the visiting skipper, C. L. Badcock, before he had scored, off the other fast bowler, Victor Trumper 11.
