NAZI PRESTIGE FALLS
SOUTH AMERICAN MOVES AGENTS'LACK ASSURANCE WASHINGTON, Nov. 22. Nazi leaders in South America have been subjected to strong pressure by Berlin to engineer a coup d’etat to establish new Governments more favourable to the Axis, says the Buenos Aires correspondent of the New York Times,
The move, he acids, appears to be closely linked .with Hitler’s effort to create .a European bloc against Britain, and is aimed at creating a situation to distract United States attention, and thereby weaken American assistance to Britain. However, diplomatic circles report that Berlin's pressure is meeting with considerable resistance from leaders entrusted to carry out the scheme, because it is realised that German prestige is considerably lower than two months ago. Thus, the agents are doubtful of their ability to obtain local-support for a coup d’etat. /Waning German prestige is due to a gerieral impression that the recent diplomatic manoeuvring in Europe signifies the failure of the military campaign against Britain. This impression is contributed to by the German failure to deliver goods promised to South American republics.
