ROUND-UP OF CROOKS
WOMEN DETECTIVES LONDON GLAMOUR GIRLS LONDON, Oct. 23. Vice dens, which have grown in London as a result of the war, are to be cleaned up by glamour girls. Not the glamour girls of the stage and beauty chorus, but girl detectives, who will wear smart tailor-made suits, silk stockings and high-heeled shoes. Scotland Yard has decided that women are the best people to look after the confidence tricksters and West End hotel and bottle party crooks which have become a menace to service men on leave. Twelve of London’s smartest policewomen will act ns “duty pals” to the girls during their training. They will take them to big stores, hotel vestibules and railway stations to pick up hints. Each detective will receive from £2 10s to £5 a week, plus a generous allowance to enable her to dress smartly so that there is nothing about her to suggest “police.” “Cosmetic allowance” also will be made to pay for the best beauty aids. Vice squads of women police are also being formed in the cities and towns to protect soldiers and munition workers.
