DECREASE IN BUILDING

PERMITS FOR DWELLINGS Building activity in the larger centres o[ New Zealand for the nine months ended September 30 showed a decrease of £1,220,403, or 14,0 per cent, compared with the same period of last year. The total for this year was £7,161.165, including £759,442 for September, as against £878,029 in the previous month and £831,501 in September. 1939. Permits issued in September for new dwellings numbered 500, compared with 602 in August and 590 in September, 1939. The total, included 230 houses the building of which was began by the housing construction branch of the State Advances Corporation, which also started operations on 16 new dwellings in other districts. Auckland’s share of building for September was 430 permits involving £282,939, including 202 new dwellings valued at £198,920 and 228 permits for alterations costing £31,293.
