An engagement is announced between Herbert James, elder son of Mrs. Wardell and the late Mr. T. W. Warden, of Te Whiti, Masterton. and Caroline Jean, elder daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. It. Ludbrook, Ruatoria. Mr. D. G. Doole, until lately teacher at the Motu School, who went into camp with the Fourth Reinforcements, has been notified of his transfer to the Royal New Zealand Air Force to train as a pilot. He is spending a few days in Gisborne before reporting at Levin on Saturday. Mr. J. Bruce Brown, who has been manager of the Eltham branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the past nine years, has received notice of his transfer to Mangaweka. Mr. Brown, who is on sick leave, will take up his new duties in a month, and will be succeeded by Mr. Walter Hay, at present accountant in Timaru. Mr. T. H. Wilmshurst, Palmerston North, celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday on Saturday. He was one of the first white boys bom in Johnsonville. Mr. Wilmshurst was called to fight in the,. Maori War at the age o' IC. He farmed at Tawa Flat and in the Wairarapa and then went to the Waikato, retiring in 1935. ,
