DEATH INTERVENES
WIDOW’S LAST JOURNEY BODY BORNE TO N.Z. (i’or Preuß Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. A suffering woman’s vain attempt to return to New Zealand was revealed when a British vessel bearing her body arrived in Auckland recently from Vancouver. Leaving England after the outbreak of war, the woman, Mrs. Lucy Emma Newton, aged 73, a widow, of 23 Hobson Crescent, Wellington, travelled through Canada and joined the ship at Vancouver, where, suffering from heart disease, she was placed in care of the ship's doctor. Ten days out from Vancouver, Mrs. Newton died. A letter in her purse marked “To be opened at my decease,” was found, and, contrary to custom, she was not buried at sea but was brought to Auckland in an improvised coffin to be cremated.
