FOOD FOR BRITAIN
GREAT STOCKS STORED LONG-TERM PLANNING LONDON, Oct. 21. Britain’s strong position in food supplies for the coming winter was emphasised by the Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, in a broadcast address-to-day. There would be no shortage in any district, he said, and under the policy of the Government distribution would be so controlled that everyone, rich or poor, had ample. The Ministry of Food was working to a plan which was worked out for months ahead. This was necessary so that every ton of space in available shipping was utilised to the best advantage. Some foods to which the people of Britain were formerly accustomed would not be available, but they were replaced by other lines, most of which were proving substitutes better for the health of Hie nation. Mobile Canteens He said that many and varied gifts of food were being made from overseas, and for these Britain was very grateful. It would be better, however, if the same value of credits, which could be used for the purchase of mobile kitchens, were sent. Gifts of food had a disturbing effect on the planned use of available shipping space, whereas the need for the mobile kitchens was great. Each fully-equip-ped kitchen cost £4OO, and he wanted to be able to rush meals to any area which suffered disorganisation by bombing. Britains food stocks were greater now than in any time of peace, and they were stored in places that were unlikely to be reached by German bombs.
Referring to parcels of food sent by relatives or friends in the Dominions and colonies to people in Britain. Lord Woolton said there was no wish to interfere in any way. These gifts meant so much to both the donors and recipients, and the Ministry of Food would not interfere with the arrival and delivery of such parcels provided they were limited to 151 b. each.
