FIRE IN AN ARCADE

SYDNEY SENSATION SYDNEY. Oct. 19. The whole of the Royal Arcade, between Pitt and George streets, was threatened by a fire which broke out in a jeweller’s shop during the lunchhour rush yesterday, and caused at least 500 people to dash for safety. For a few minutes, at least 200 diners were trapped in cafes. A jeweller’s two shops were destroyed, and jewellery and plant valued at £3OOO were lost: other premises were severely damaged; an elderly man’s clothing was set alight, and another man’s arms were scorched. Seventy firemen were able to confine the fire to the centre of the arcade. The fire started in the centre of the arcade, in the rear of one of the two shops or the Austral Unbreakable Watch and Crystal Company.
