WEED-KILLING TRAIN
WAR USE AS FIRE-FIGHTER LONDON, Aug, 26. England's one weed-killing train, owned by the Southern Railway, has been converted into a fire-fighting unit for the duration of the war. In peace time the train, which has been operating for three years, toured the company’s system, spending two or three days at a time on stretches of line which needed attention. Apparatus for brewing weed-killing mixture, tanks to hold the liquid, and sprays, are pari of its equipment. Now the train will carry 18,000 gallons of water, which will be sprayed on fires nedr the railway. The train will be able to "play" on a fire for two and a-hall' hours without refilling.
