WET CANTEENS
FAVOURED BY CHAPLAINS POSITION IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, Oct. 2. The decision of the synod of the Grafton Anglican Diocese, to advocate wet canteens as the "lesser of two evils,” provided hotels within a fivemile radius of military camps are out of bounds from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., was warmly commended by army chaplains. “It is gratifying to see the church adopting a realistic attitude to the problem of troops and liquor,” said one chaplain. "Opinion among army padres is unanimously in favour of wet canteens as the only intelligent solution to the problem.” The question of wet canteens may be discussed by the Sydney synod of the Church of England, and by the district synods of the Methodist Conference throughout the State, when they meet in November.
