BIBLE SOCIETY

GISBORNE SUPPORT £330 SENT TO LONDON PRESIDENT’S INTEREST Keen interest in the progress of the British and Foreign Bible Society was shown by a satisfactory attendance at the annual meeting of the Gisborne branch, held last evening in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church hall. The Rev. H. A. Gould presided, and Miss Berg, organising secretary for the district, and the Rev. David Calder, New Zealand general secretary of the society, were present. The . district secretary expressed thanks to the public for generous support of the society’s work, and stated that £330 11s had been dispatched to Bible House, London, as Gisborne’s 1939 contribution to the world-wide effort. She thanked the voluntary collectors on behalf of the society, and 1 said that though the new world conditions had raised fresh difficulties in regard to finance, those difficulties were overshadowed by the new importance of trying to spread the word of God. That work was the highest calling of all. Election of Officers > The election of officers resulted in the Rev. H. A. Gould being elected president, with Messrs. J. C. Hardy and H. G. Wellborne as vice-presi-dents, and Mr. F. Turley as hon. secretary. The committee comprises Mesdames S. D. Chiles, H. G. : Wellborne, R. Andrew, T. Smellie, M. F. Robinson, G. M. Dodgshun, R. Grant, R. H. Lory, J. Dawson, D. O’Halloran, S. Orr, and A. Skillen, Messrs. F. Forge, G. K. Pasley, A. Skillen, R. Maddox, and all ministers of religion. In returning thanks for his election as president, Mr. Gould stated that he had long felt that the work of the society warranted the warmest support of the public and the most intense effort of ministers and churchmen generally. He had first gained that conviction when as a younger man he had worked in the Jewish quarters of East London as a missionary, and later had it confirmed when he was with the Armenian mission in Asia Minor.
