MATAWAI NEWS

SCHOOL BALL MANY VISITORS PRESENT (Herald Correspondent.) The event of the school year for the pupils, the annual ball, was held in the Matawai Public Hall on Saturday night. Visiting pupils of adjacent schools included some from Whakarau, Motu, Koranga and Homebrook. Besides parents and friends, expupils from the Gisborne High School and Intermediate School journeyed home to make merry with their juniors. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the Parents’ League, Mrs. G. R. Robb being ably assisted by Mesdames H. Bulst, W. F. Robb, and L. Nichol. The music was provided by Miss U. Reed, assisted by Mr. Wilson and Miss M. Korte. Messrs. G. Tucker and C- Hustler were the M.C’s, and other members of the committee also helped. At the end of the school programme, Mr. W. F. Robb, chairman of the Matawai School Committee, congratulated the parents, children and teachers on the excellence of their appearance and performance. Among those present were Mesdames A. M. Trafford, F. and C. Korte, R. Fleming, J. K. Briant, S. Lockett, G. Stairs, F. McPike, A. Marshall, J. Grantham, T. A. Redpath, W. Peach, C. G. Fielder, G. F. Mortleman, B. Malone, W. Fletcher, S. J. Sinton, A. J. Hustler, G. Tucker, R. Kerekere, C. Hustler and R. Hustler; Misses A. Gibson, E. Holmes, A. Richardson, B. Hutchins, N. Clark, V. Drake, JB. Davenport, D. Korte, I. Buscke, J. Robb, J. Trafford, L. Mortleman, and T. Mazengarb. Miss E. Holmes spent the week-end with Mrs. T. A. Redpath.—Mesdames H. Bulst and W. F. Robb represented this district on Saturday at the Wailtohu county’s effort in Gisborne in aid of the R.S.A. queen.—Mesdames C. V. Smith and A. E. Gibson, Matawai, attended the Women’s Institute council meeting in Gisborne. Mesdames J. Bell, A. Picken, G. McPike also attended, as visitors front Koranga. The ball in aid of the Matawai dental clinic, postponed from last month, is to be held on October 26.
