TOM MIX KILLED

AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT PINNED UNDER CAR POPULAR FILM STAR (Elec. Tel. Copy right—United I’ress Assu.) (Reed. Oet. 14, 9 a.m.) FLORENCE (Arizona), Oct. 12. Tom Mix, the rough-riding cowboy of the films and the circus, was killed in an automobile accident. Apparently he lost control of the car. which overturned, pinning him under the wreckage. Tom Mix was born in 1881, near £1 Paso. Texas, on a cattle ranch. As a lad of 17 years he fought in the Spanish-American War. He saw service in the Philippines, and also in China, as a machine gunner, during the Boxer Rebellion. Later, lie broke in horses tor use in the Boer War, and took charge of a shipment of animals to South Africa. In 1903 lie was appointed Deputy U.S. Marshal in Oklahoma. He made his screen debut in 1914. and soon he and bis horse, Tony, were beloved b> youthful cinema-goers the world over. Mix made a tour.of Europe in 1025. At Southampton he rode his horse Tony down a special gangway from the liner Aquitiina to the quay. He also rode Tony to a complimentary banquet at the Savoy Hotel. The Lord Mayor of London received nim at the Mansion House. Altogether Mix starred in over 80 pictures, and “opposite” him appeared such famous screen performers as Colleen Moore, Clara Bow, Billie Dove, and Lilian Rich. At one time his salary was said to be £4OOO a week.
