NUTRITION RESEARCH

HEALTH IN DOMINION DR. MURIEL BELL’S POST (Per Pr«ss Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The appointment of Dr. Muriel Bell, of Dunedin, as nutritionist to the Department ol’ Health was. announced last night by the Minister of Health, the Hon. T. H. Armstrong. Dr. Bell has for some years been a member of the stall' of J.he physiology department of the medical school in Dunedin and while there has undertaken a considerable amount of research relating io nutrition. Dr. Bell is a member of the Board of Health and of the Medical Research Council. “The Medical Research Council set up a committee some years ago to undertake research work into the subject of nutrition,’’ Mr. Armstrong said. “Dr. Bell has been actively associated with the work of this committee,” said the Minister, in explaining that it was proposed that Dr.- Bell should undertake the duties of nutritionist to the Department of Health. The appointment, said the Minister, had been contemplated for some time. Presentday conditions made it more desirable than ever that such an appointment should be made with a view to ensuring that the nutrition of the public was not allowed to suffer during the international crisis. Among other duties Dr. Bell would be asked to interest herself in the dietary of orphanages, boarding schools and other institutions whether under the control of the Government or of private bodies, to advise in regard to the teaching of dietetics in training colleges and schools and generally to be the Health Department’s adviser in all matters pertaining to nutrition.

The Minister added that the Health Department had reported to him that, in its oponion, there was no one else in New Zealand available and better fitted for the position than Dr. Bell.
