PLUMBER FINED
INTOXICATED IN TRUCK HIT CONSTABLE’S CAR (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A plumber, Daniel O’Connell Jones, aged 44, was out of luck when he backed into a constable’s car parked in front of the police station on Monday, for it resulted in his appearance before Messrs. V. fi. Winter and T. P. Sweetmari, J.Ps., in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday to answer a charge of having been intoxicated while in charge of a motor truck. He was fined £ls and costs and was prohibited from driving for 12 months. Mr. F. H. Jones appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Sergeant L. T. Moore said that at 1.10 p.m. on Monday the accused was driving a truck in Queen street. Apparently on getting into the truck he backed along toward the police station. In backing the truck, added the sergeant, he went fairly fast and hit Constable J. McAlpine’s car. He then turned the truck round with some difficulty and drove away. Constable McAlphine apprehended the accused and brought him to the station, where a doctor certified that he was not in a fit state to drive a vehicle. Mr, Jones said that it was a borderline case. One of accused’s workmates was leaving for camp and he had two or .three drinks-, with-him during - the lunch hour.
