LABOUR FOR FARMS
STEADY DEMAND FOR MEN TRAINEE PLAN SUCCESS 4B SCHEME SUSPENSION A steady demand by farmers of the Gisborne district for men is reported by Mr. T. A. Johnson, registrar of the Social Security Department, when commenting to-day on the steps taken to make an adequate supply of labour available for farm work. The temporary suspension of the No. 4B contract scheme was calculated to make mere men available for work more directly associated with farming. Contracts at present in operation and those that had been definitely arranged for were still going on, Mr. Johnson said, but as the contracts finished the men would be given the opportunity to go direct to farm work. It was intended to reinstate the No. 4B scheme later. Much success had been achieved by the No. 4F scheme, under which men were trained under the subsidy system for farm work. The expanded scheme with the additional subsidy had been in operation for about three months, and a fair number of men had been placed in that way. Reports were coming in from both farmers and trainees testifying to the success of the scheme, Mr. Johnson said, and it appeared that it was filling a definite need in the provision of men for farm work. No 13 scheme was proceeding as usual to cater for men who were exempt from farm work.
