MAJESTIC THEATRE V\ - “GOLDEN GLOVES” AND “OUR NEIGHBOURS, THE CARTERS” The story of how a crooked boxing racket is smashed, is unfolded in a stirring story, “Golden Gloves,” now at the Majestic Theatre. It is not uncommon to find a thrilling boxing contest in a film, but usually it is included as a side issue. Not so in “Golden Gloves,’ which features pugilistic encounters in the ring, and they are indeed hectic. J. Carrol Naish has the role of a boxing promoter, whose racket Is to exploit the prowess of the most promising fighters of the ring, all to his gain and their disadvantage. Robert Paige, as a newspaper reporter, realises just what Naish is doing, and patiently he bides his time awaiting the opportunity to expose the racket and crush Naish. . Promoting an amateur contest which produces some thrilling fights, Paige has with him Richard Denning in the role of' a heavyweight. There are exciting situations in plenty before Paige succeeds in bringing about the downfall of Naish, but it is accomplished, at the end of a story that holds interest throughout. Not the least important role is taken by Jean Cagney, a sister of the well-known star, James Cagney, and she plays Impart well. Another fine picture on the programme is “Our Neighbours, The Carters,” a simple, homely, hometown drama, telling how the Carters, residents of a small Ohio town, face sorrow and joy together with great family loyalty. It is a story replete with human, touching incidents, and one that makes a strong heart appeal. The principals are Fay Bainler, Frank Graven, Edmund Lowe, Genesieve Tobin and Joyce Arleen. The programme includes a further chapter of “Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe.” —Special Matinee at 1.30 p.m. Saturday— A special programme consisting of two features and two serials will be presented at the children’s matinee which commences at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday.
