FENCING MATERIAL
AN ACUTE SHORTAGE NO SUPPLY FOR MONTHS An acute shortage of fencing materials in Gisborne and most other parts of the Dominion is holding up farm operations, and the only supplies of wire and staples in town are in such small lots as to make anything but urgent maintenance jobs out of the question, unless the farmer himself has carry-over stocks on hand. The absence of supplies of all types of galvanised wire since the outbreak of the war has drained local stocks praetially to vanishing point, and staples are in much the same position, the small quantities available being rationed out to customers in lots that are usually inadequate for the purpose, but which the selling firms believe are just proportions under the circumstances. •
During the next few months the position is expected to become even more acute, for advice was received to-day that while supplies of staple wire are not expected from England, in view of the insatiable demand for war purposes, a small shipment would leave Canada this month to fill a portion of an order which had been expected last month. By the time this shipment arrived in New Zealand and is made into staples, it probably will be October and possibly November before quantities are available for distribution. In addition, there is yet no certainty of fencing wire supplies.
