CIVIC BLOCK OPENED
ROTORUA BUILDINGS | £40,000 ENTERPRISE NOVEL HEATING SYSTEM (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, this day. The official opening of the new Rotorua civic buildings and municipal theatre, which are combined in one block erected on the town square in the centre of the town, took place yc-sterday in the presence of a large official gathering and representative assembly of residents of the district. The opening was performed by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, and other speakers were the Mayor of Rotorua, Mr. T. Jackson, the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, the Bishop of Aotearoa. the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Mr. C. H. Clinkard. an early Mayor of the town and for many years its representative in Parliament, Mr. A. F. Moncur, M.P., the present Parliamentary representative, Mr. O. H. Coleman, chairman of the council’s finance committee, the architect, Mr.. Edmund Anscombe, Wellington, and the building contractor, Mr. C. R. Lloyd. The block, which has cost approximately £40,000, combines under one roof the municipal offices, museum, borough library, a concert chamber, and an up-to-date picture theatre to accommodate over 1000 persons. The building is of striking modern design, partly of two storeys in height, and among other novel features is heated by means of a thermal bore sunk in the adjacent grounds.
