The periodical Fortune, is publishing to-morrow the results of a survey it has conducted since France’s capitulation which discloses that a majority is opposed to the United States d°mg more than at present to assist Britain and also that only 21.2 per cent of those wanting to give more help are willing to send the army, navy and air force. Fifty-seven point four per cent oppose more help, 34.2 per cent, favour more help and 8.4 per cent express no opinion. The replies generally indicate a recession since last month of the desire for intervention . The question “if a major foreign Power threatened to overtake any of the following countries by means of invasion would you be willing for the United States to go to the rescue with armed forces” was answered as follows: , .. po Canada— Yes, 87.8 per cent; No, 6.8 per cent. , Hawaii— Yes, 74 per cent; No, 12.5 per cent. , , T _ Phillipines— Yes, 65.5 per cent; No, 20.3 per cent. Bermuda.— Yes, 60.3 per cent; No., 19.1 per cent. Dutch East Indies. —Yes, 17.1 per cent; No, 54.7 per cent; 28.2 per cent expressed no opinion. Mexico—Yes, 76.5 per cent; No, 12.5 per cent. Braizl. —Yes, 54.7 per cent; No, 24.9 per cent. Thirty-seven per cent believe tne United States will eventually enter the war' and 44.8 per cent disbelieve this, Whereas in January 39.1 per cent believed the chances of America entering the war were better than 50-50. Twenty-two point eight per cent believed the chances were even and 26.2 believed it was unlikely. Eighty-eight point three per cent at present believe that if Italy and Germany win the United States should arm to the teeth regardless of expense and prepare for any trouble, and 7.8 per cent oppose arms expenditure in favour of peaceful relations with the totalitarian countries.
