FOOD FOR BRITAIN
LIST OF ESSENTIALS PREPARATION FOR SIEGE (Reed. July 22, 9 a.m.) LONDON .July 21. The Australian Associated Press learns that the Ministry of Food has listed cheese, bread, butter, milk, herrings, fruit, and vegetables as essential foodstuffs for Britain in the event of a long siege. They will be given preference over all other commodities in the allocation of shipping for imports. This list is greatly influencing the discussions at present proceeding regarding the extent to which the Dominions can replace European sources of supply. Food is the main, though not the only subject of these discussions. Eggs are also declared to have a psychological rather than a great food value, but the demand for them is bound to continue. Small improvement in the consumption of butter can, therefore, be expected. Recent consumption has averaged 3Joz, a head. Bacon is the principal item among other foods which the United Kingdom previously imported from countries now under German domination. It is understood that Canada is meeting this deficiency.
