Death of Pilot An old boy of the Wanganui Collegiate School, Pilot-Officer C. R. Frankish who was reported to have been killed in action on May 12, had been married only a week prior to his death. His bride was Miss Marjorie Townend, of Auckland, who had arrived in England a few days before the marriage. Payers of Dues’ Representative The vacancy on the Gisborne Harbour Board occasioned by the recent death of Mr. Thos. Corson has been filled by the nomination of Mr. Chas. Mills, Te Karaka, by the GovernorGeneral in Council. The nomination is made under the provisions of the Harbours Act relating to the representation of payers of dues where a vacancy occurs between the usual election, dates.

Referee for Country Game Owing to the resident referees being unavalaible for a representative Rugby match in Te Karaka on Saturday, the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees' Association was asked to provide an official, and Mr. K. R. Waite was nominated. At the conclusion of the game, won by the Opotiki sub-union representatives, members of the Waikohu sub-union expressed their indebtedness to Mr. Waite and to the association for the prompt response to their request. Combined Smoke Concert A combined smoke concert for members of the Gisborne Fire Brigade and the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association was held in the fire brigade social hall on Saturday night. The presentation of the .shield to the referees’ team, the winners of the annual football match, was carried out during the evening. The toast list was as follows: “The King”: “The Referees’ Team,’’ proposed by Mr. T. Stevens and replied to by Mr. .1. Green; “The Fire Brigade Team and Band,” proposed by Mr. A. E. Ingram and replied to by Mr. P. McMahon; "The Referee,” proposed by Mr. Gabolinscy and replied to by Mr. L. Martin; "The Rugby Union.” proposed by Mr. 11. Hunter and replied to by Mr. W. H. James; “The Fire Brigade,” proposed by Mr. K. R. Waite and replied to by Mr. J. Donovan; “The Referees’ Association,” proposed by Mr. E- W. McKenzie and replied to by Mr. K. R. Waite; “Ringins,” proposed by Mr. W. Norman and replied to by Messrs. S. Lee, P. Edwards and H. Duckworth; “Artists and the Press,” proposed by Mr. A. Toye and replied to by Mr. S. Boxer; “Absent Friends,” proposed by Mr, N. Sharpe.
