CONTROL OF DANCES

STARTING. AT MIDNIGHT Had the Wellington City Council power to control dances advertised to start at midnight on Sunday? asked Mr. T. Forsyth, at a meeting of the council. If so, it should be strictly used, as with the short week and ample leisure there was no need for entertainment at such an hour. A dance was recently advertised in Newtown to take place from Sunday midnight to 4 a.m. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, pointed out that that dance must really have started on Monday. The position was that, while the council could lay down certain conditions in the case of public dances, if the dances were private it had no say.
