PRAYERS FOR FRANCE

INTERCESSION ASKED DEFENCE OF FREEDOM Throughout the Dominion yesterday church authorities adopted wholeheartedly the recommendation of spiritual leaders at the heart of the Empire, and offered special prayers that the heart and hand of France be strengthened to meet the ordeal which is now reaching Its crisis. In all Gisborne churches, the intercession invocation took some special form, and at Holy Trinity the second half of the evening service was devoted to thoughts of and prayers for those who lead the French nation, for the soldiers and sailors and airmen who are defending France, and for the hapless refugees, especially women and children, whose homes have been broken and whose livfes have been shattered by the onrush of the war. The hymn “O God of Earth and Altar” was sung as a. special intercession feature, and the French national anthem, “The Marsellaise," was played by the organist, Mr. D. Dyer. Canon A. F. Hall preached upon the war crisis, and upon the duty of mankind to accept the sacrifices laid upon it by the maintenance of ideals and especially of the Christian principles.
