HAMMON ENLISTS
AUCKLANDER IN VICTORIA The Victorian Rugby International, Bill Hamilton, of St. Kilda, and formerly of New Zealand, has enlisted in 4 the Australian Imperial Force. He has resigned his commission in the Royal Melbourne Regiment to join the * 2/7’ Machine Gun Battalion in Tasmania. Hammon captained the Auckland Grammar team, and played for the Auckland Province before going to Victoria in 1934 and gaining immediate selection in the Victorian team. He represented the State until his last game last season, captaining the side in 1937-38 wher. Victoria played the Springboks, as well as New South Wales. Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. Hammon returned to New Zealand to play against some of his teammates of the 1934 All Black trials, when he represented Australia in the 1936 tour of New Zealand. He played some brilliant football, ’being one of . the outstanding players of the tour.
