VIVIAN JOINS ARMY CONSPICUOUS CAREER One of New Zealand’s best allround cricketers, H. G. Vivian, has enlisted in Auckland for military service overseas. Leaving Auckland in April of last year, Vivian won! to England to take up a position in Sir Julicn Calm's furniture business, and also to play in Sir Julien's cricket side. He returned to Auckland after the outbreak of war with the intention of joining jhc Air Force. Vivian’s career in cricket in New Zealand has been me of the most conspicuous in recent years. He early attracted attention at Mount Albert Grammar School, where he played in the first eleven. From the time he left school until his departure for England he was a member of the Parnell first grade team and first gained Auckland representative honours in 1930. Vivian won the Redpath Cup for the best batting performances in New Zealand first-class cricket in 193334. As a member of New Zealand sides he toured Great Britain in 1931 and 1937; on the former occasion he was only 18 years of age the youngest member of the team. He gained an impressive record by scoring more than 1000 runs on both tours.
Appearing in the latest list of volunteers also is the name of R. C. Burns, prominent in Rugby and cricket in Christchurch. He was a member of the Old Boys Rugby football and cricket clubs, and is a former Canterbury representative wicketkeeper. He has been living in Auckland during the past 12 months.
