SPORTSMAN’S DEATH

MR. RUPERT J. COOKE The death occurred in Melbourne on May 10 of Mr. Rupert J. Cooke, a well-known Canterbury sportsman in the early part of this century. A fine and powerful forward, he represented Canterbury at Rugby football from 1899 to 1903. He gained South Island honours in 1902 and 1903, and in the latter year loured Australia with what many critics agree was the best. New Zealand team over assembled. in addition to his Rugby ability, Mr. Cooke was a champion cyclist, distance runner and amateur boxer. He went to Melbourne in 1913 and entered the hotel business. He followed up his Rugby interests, being president of the Kiwi Club in Melbourne.
