NAVAL LOSSES
AIRCRAFT CARRIER WELL-KNOWN LINER (Reed. June 11. 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 10. It is officially announced that His Majesty’s aircraft carrier Glorious and also the troopship Orama are presumed to have been lost. His Majesty’s destroyers Acasta and Ardent are presumed 'to have been sunk, while the tanker Oilpioneer is presumed ,to nave been lost. These were accompanying the Glorious. No troops were abo.ard the Orama. The Orama was built at Barrow in 1924 for the Orient Line and had a gross tonnage of 19,777 tons. Her length was 632 ft. and her breadth 76ft. She was well known in the United Kingdom-Australia trade, where she carried first class and tourist class passengers. She has carried many Gisborne passengers on these trips. The Orama also visited New Zealand on a cruise soon after she was built. At that time she was the flagship of the Orient Line and was the first ship built for this company under its rebuilding scheme carried out since the Great War. At the time of her sinking, however, she was the oldest vessel in the company’s service.
