WAR EXPENDITURE

AUSTRALIA’S HUGE BILL COMMITMENTS £153,000,000 (Reed. June 1, 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 31. The House of Representatives passed bills providing for expenditure for war and defence purposes of £77,740,000, of which £68,740,000 will be borrowed and the remaining £9,000,000 appropriated from the revenue. The Treasurer, Mr. P. C. Spender, said the bills covered commitments up to December 31, but he could give no guarantee that further appropriations would not be necessary before that date. Mr. Spender said that with these bills the total authorisations by Parliament for the war and special defence expenditure amounted to £153,000,000. The Prime Minister, Mr. R. G.
