Gisborne Rebekah Lodge
A meeting of the Gisborne Rebekah Lodge, No. 8,1.0.0. F., was held recently in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Derby street, the N.G., Sister P. Sutton, presiding over a good attendance. A vote of condolence was passed with the family of the late Mr. Sayers. Sister Gritton, a visitor from Mizpah Lodge, Auckland, was welcomed. One new member received the degree. There will be a social and dance next lodge night. White Feather to Wrong Address It was thought that the despicable action of sending white feathers to men of military age had died out in Gisborne, but it was learned this morning that another feather had been sent to a wrong address. The recipient, Mr. A. McAneney, enlisted for service overseas last Saturday. Enclosed in the envelope was a cutting from the Herald of Major-General B. C. Freyberg’s recent appeal for more volunteer's. The address was written in a wavery hand. Since the beginning of the war the Herald’s attention has been drawn to three such letters sent in each case to men who had volunteered and were awaiting the call. Man Found in Kitchen When they heard movements at the back of their house and discovered a man in the kitchen early yesterday afternoon the suspicions of .two Gisborne women were not aroused. The woinen had had a telephone call from a man who was seeking employment, but their visitor did not admit that he had ’phoned the house. He said that he had entered the house to knock on the door. He was a recent arrival from the Waikato district and desired to get work as a shepherd, or as a cowman-gardener. In reply to further questions, he said he had no horse or dogs, and that he would communicate further with the occupier of the house when he had arranged about board and knew his Gisborne address. After the man had left the premises the woman of the house discovered that the contents of her purse, consisting of a £1 note, had been removed, and it was only then that she connected its disappearance with her recent visitor,
