Greater Productive Effort

An appeal for a greater productive effort was made by Mr. J. C. Field at yesterday’s luncheon held by the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Fanners’ Union, and he urged particularly for an increased output of pig meat. He said 15,000 cows were supplying the factor'es of the district, and if Gisborne emulated the Danish example of one pig to one cow the local, output-would be immensely increased. The climatic conditions were much better in New Zealand than in Denmark, and the cost of feed was substantially cheaper, and he suggested that a committee representing the Farmers’ Union and young farmers’ clubs might investigate ways and means of boosting the production. Dairy production also might be increased by changing the dairy herds to the low hill country during the off season. That was done on .the occasion of one of the big floods in the district, and.it was found that dairy production increased greatly the following season.
