While the Belgian Parliament was sitting, at Limoges to ascertain the Government’s action, it was officially announced that King Leopold had been struck from the rolls of the French Legion of Honour, of which he held the order of the Grand Cross. The meeting of Parliament was. the occasion of a demonstration of gratitude to France. The President of the Senate, M. Gillon, confirmed that a number of Belgian units had disobeyed the King and placed themselves alongside the northern Allied armies. The Prime Minister, M. Pieriot, said: “We will only lay down our arms when we have regained peace, independence and freedom.” The Parliamentarians unanimously supported the Government’s attitude that it was juridically and morally impossible for King Leopold to reign.
