CHANCELLOR’S WARNING PEOPLE OF BRITAIN (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, May 29. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Kingsley Wood, after announcing in the House of Commons that the new excess profits tax of 100 per cent would apply from April 1, warned the nation to prepare for further sacrifices and burdens, although these would not be imposed immediately.
He emphasised that the situation had vastly changed since Sir John Simon’s computation of the expenditure.
