Exploiting the Public An instance of the susceptibility of .the public and the maner in which it can be exploited by suave salesmen has been reported locally. An intinerant trader purporting to represent an outside firm sold to a country customer, as a result of plausible talk, a five-yard length of dress material for £2 10s. Unfortunately, a neighbour of the purchaser at about the same time bought similar material in a Gisborne shop for Is lid. a yard. The exchange of experiences and subsequent inquiries revealed that the visiting trader had actually purchased the material retail in Gisborne for Is lid. a-yard and then taken it to the country and obtained 10s a yard for it. The customer is now able to realise how the salesman is able to tour the country in a luxurious motor car.
