REFUGEE CHILDREN

DOMINION ADOPTION ENDORSEMENT FOR PLAN MR. COLEMAN’S VIEWS The plan propounded by the Mayor of Napier, Mr. T. W. Hercock, for the adoption in New Zealand of a large number of British children now without parents has been endorsed by Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., acting in his capacity of Mayor of Gisborne. As outlined by Mr. Hercock, the scheme is to ask Parliament to make the offer of refuge for 25,000 children from the United Kingdom whose homes and parents are wiped out by the war. Mr. Hercock considers that this number, spread throughout the Dominion, could be absorbed into private homes by people wishing to make some acknowledgment of the great sacrifices made by the menfolk and womenfolk of Britain.

Mr. Coleman has advised the Herald, in a telegram from Wellington, that .he has endorsed the proposal in principle, leaving the number to be decided by the Government.
