Carslakc Retires Writing on April 30, the London correspondent of The Press says: The turf will be the poorer by the retirement from the riding list of Bernard Carslake, who is now 54 years of age. The health of this Australian-born jockey is affected by the wasting necessary now even to ride at 9st. On medical advice, he has decided to retire from the saddle after nearly 40 years of successful jockeyship. After riding Ipswich first past the post at Alexandra Park on April 20, he collapsed in,a finish of heads, and he had to have medical attention. That was his last race. “Brownie” has always been recognised as a powerful, cool, and a brilliant stylist. He Rad no superiors and but one or two equals among the jockeys of the last 20 years. He has ridden in many countries. In 1928 he tried training. His plan:, for the future are indefinite. When war broke out in 1914, Carslake was riding in Austria-Hungary. He escaped from Austria disguised as the fireman of a railway engine, and reached Rumania, where he rode a number of winners in 1915. He then went on to Russia, where he became champion jockey, but had to flee when the revolution broke out in 1917 and returned to England. In 1919 he won the St. Leger on Lord Derby’s Keysoe. Since then he has won most of the important races in England.
