MORE PLANES LOST
NAZIS PUT DOWN BIG R.A.F. BAG DAMAGE BY BOMBS AREAS OF GERMANY TRANSPORTS DESTROYED (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 29. noon.) LONDON, May 28. The Air Ministry states: “Our fighters yesterday destroyed 50 German planes and seriously damaged 29. Fourteen of our fighters are missing.” It is officially announced that Royal Air Force fighters destroyed or damaged 22 German planes in northeastern France to-day.
The Royal Air Force yesterday, without loss, bombed Hamburg, Duisburg, Dortmund. Bremen and Cologne and again bombed Stavanger and also destroyed or damaged eight German planes in the Narvik area.
The Air Ministry states that units of the Fleet Air Arm co-operating with the Royal Air Force Coastal Command carried out without loss a series of heavy and effective attacks yesterday against enemy positions on the French and Belgian, coasts. They destroyed batteries of transports and scattered troops. Royal Air Force medium bombers continued attacks against concentrations in north-eastern France last night. Two of our bombers have not yet returned.
Last night British heavy bombers, without loss, again raided enemy communications in the Rhineland and the Low Countries.
The anti-aircraft defences of the Thames Estuary came into action for several periods after midnight.
An air raid warning was sounded over East Kent shortly before noon. The all-clear was sounded after 40 minutes.
Observers say enemy planes appeared off the south-east coast. One is believed to have crossed the coastline. Anti-aircraft units were quickly in action and waves of fighters went up.
