Dearer Coke
The important part played by the sale of by-products of the gasworks in the borough finances were indicated at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. The report submitted by the manager of the borough gas department, Mr. J. Y, Douglas, showed that the department sold 16,900 bags of coke and 33,818 gallons of tar during the year ending March 31. The council decided that the cost of coke was to be increased from 3s to 3s 3d a bag for large coke, and from 3s 9d to 4s a -bag for crushed.
