EXPANSION PLANNED
CANADIAN FORCES MILITARY AND AIR UNITS (Reed. May 28, 2.20 p.m.) OTTAWA, May 27. The Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. W. L. MacKenzie King, m the House of Commons, announced plans for the immediate expansion of the Canadian military and air forces to meet the critical situation in Europe. He added that the expansion programme would need the nation s cooperation, notably labour and industry which would have to work day and night to provide equipment. The Minister of Defence, Mr. N. M. Rogers detailed the increases, including the formation of a veterans reserve and rifle battalions for the fourth division for active service, the calling up of 5000 applicants on the Hst for the air force and also skilled unemployed tradesmen ana certain unskilled men Skilled employees essential to industry are requested to remain in employment at present. They are receiving special volunteers’ badges. Mr Rogers added that the numerical increases at present cannot be determined, Members of the Opposition cheered Dr. Manion, former leader of the Conservative Party when he congratulated the Government, adding that he had the support of the nation in doing so.
