WINSOME LU’S WEIGHT WANGANUI ADJUSTMENTS BROUGHTON'S TOTAL 51 OLYMPUS IN FORM By “Trenton” Mr. H. Coyle has made the following rehandicaps for the Wanganui meeting:— Purua Hack Hurdles: Segra, 9.9. Connolly Handicap: Winsome Lu, 8.6. Winter Oats: Nelumbo, 8.4. Entered For Ellerslie After being off the scene for two years, Poker Face, who showed pace when raced, has been nominated for the Great Northern meeting. In 1937 The Ace gelding won the Hinuera Handicap, six furlongs, at Matamata, from a large field, while he finished ■second to Calcutta in a highweight event at Rotorua a little later. The following season he dead-heated with Lady Meath in the Waiuku Hack, seven furlongs and 22yds., at Pukekohe. He was placed on another couple of occasions during the same term - Poker Face is getting on in years, for he is now rising eight. Hack Nominations Clinch is engaged in hack events at the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting, and though he has won over £SOO he can still fulfil his engagements at Ellerslie, for the hack conditions are at time of entry, and the nominations for these races closed before he had won at Te Rapa and made his stake earnings over £SOO. He should be hard to beat in anything he lakes on, for he is one of the best hacks seen out for a considerable time. Nearing His Best Olympus ran a good race at Pukekohe when he finished second to Silver Quex, and in the open sprint at Te Rapa he was never further back than third, eventually finishing second tc .Te Takina. The son of Pantheon looks to be about at his best now, and it would not be surprising to see him win at the Great Northern meeting. Conditions Against Him Streamline was always prominent in the Waikato Hurdles on the first day at Te Rapa, and Jewelled Girdle was the only one to beat him home. On the second day he was lying third with half a mile to go, but then commenced to feel the strain —and was a poor fourth at the finish. The going was very heavy on the latter occasion and he was undoubtedly hampered by it. However, with better conditions at. Ellerslie he should get some more money. For Northern Meeting

Tolaga, who accounted for the Waikato Plate at Te Rapa, is a six-year-old gelding by Master Colossus, owned and trained by L. Knapp at Awapuni. He went to the front early and stayed there, winning by nearly a dozen lengths, quite outclassing the field, This was only his third start. In his previous efforts he was fourth in the Trial Plate, six furlongs, at Bulls in March, and recently van second in a hurdle event at Otaki to El Meynell, .so that he is a most promising sort. He was entered for the Melville Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, which included hunters, on the first day, but did not start, and his engagements at the Great Northern meeting are the Green Lane Steeplechase and the Panmure and 'Orakei Hurdles.

Racing Consistently Wakarara has had 13 starts this season and only on five occasions has the daughter of Tractor been further back than fourth. She won the Electric Handicap, five furlongs, at Carterton last March, and annexed two Six-furlong'races at the recent Marlborough meeting, while Military Maid beat her over a similar distance at Otaki. She was unplaced atr Foxton on Saturday. Will They Meet? New Zealand’s two great jumpers, Padishah and Clarion Call, are likely tc meet soon. The first opportunity will be provided by the Wanganui Steeplechase on June 3, the second day of the meeting, and it is quite on the cards that, both will take their places in the field..' If They‘do they will provide a splendid attraction,' which will be very welcome to' the Wanganui Jockey Club.'' -Each is a steeplechaser of champion grade, and the handicapper’s assessments will be read with interest. Padishah has been weighted for the Grandstand Steeplechase, to be run on 'the first day of the Wanganui meeting, and is to carry. 12.12, and Clarion Call does not come in until the-second day, although he is in the Century Hurdles with 12.5: Padishah has won a Wellington Cup, a Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, the last two Grand 1 National Hurdld Races, and the last Grand National Steeplechase. In the Wellington Cup he carried'only 7.9, but he proved that he couid stay. He carried 11.5 when he won the Grand National Steeplechase, which Clarion Call had won in' the previous year under 114Clarion Call has carried big weights successfully in hurdle races. At Ellerslie he won a two-mild hurdle race with 12.9 up. He won the ‘Egmonl Steeplechase (about two miles) very easily with 11,10 last month, and at the Waikato meeting carried 12.5 into second place in the Tc Rapa Steeplechase, three miles.

Padishah has been in steady work for some time, and is reported to befonvard, but Clarion Call has raced recently and should have an advantage in condition. Apart from Padishah and Clarion Call, the Wanganui field is not strong. The best performed of the others is Bridegroom, who won solidly at Awapuni and is sure to run good races this winter.

Among Clarion Call’s opponents in the Hurdles will be Curie, who should he improved through his racing at Awapuni, and Soho, who was not quite ready when he finished a close second to'Blue Tiger last week. Blue Tiger, Kaiwaka, and Student Prince are others who will contribute to the strength of the field. Kaiwaka is progressing satisfactorily as a hurdler and looks the makings of a National horse.
