OBITUARY
MR. WILLIAM TOWN OLD GISBORNE RESIDENT The death of Mr. - William Town occurred in the Cook Hospital this morning after a long illness, and removed one who had resided in the Gisborne district for the past 48 years. Born in London in 1868, Mr. Town came to New Zealand six years later in the sailing ship Queen of the Age. Residing in Auckland, he became apprenticed to a Mr. Griffiths, a butcher, and when Messrs. Nelson Bros, opened the Taruheru freezing works he secured employment in his trade there. Up to the time of his death he was one of the few remaining employees in Gisborne of the Taruheru works. After a period at the Gisborne abattoirs, Mr. Town became foreman at the Hicks Bay works nearly 20 years ago, and for the past 15 years was in charge of the shop at the Kaiti freezing works. Ohe of the early members of the Druids Lodge in Gisborne, he was a phst district president of the order, and was also a past primo of the Buffaloes Lodge. He was an old member of the Kahutia Bowling Club, and joined when it existed as the Turanganui club in Childers rOad. His other associations included membership of the Cosmopolitan Club and of the Poverty Bay Cricket Umpires’ Association. In 1895 he married in Gisborne Miss Minnie Charles, who, with two sons and one daughter, are left to mourn theft loss. The family comprises Mr. W. J. Town, Gisborne. Mr. F. J. Town, Arero, and Mrs. H. Dustin, Murray’s Bay, Auckland. The interment will take place at the Taruheru cemetery to-morrow, following a service at Cochrane's private chapel, Williams street, at 2.45 p.m.
